November 25, SundayOn Sunday, November 25th, the Westside church of Christ in Ames will be hosting the monthly area youth activity.

A devotional will take place at the church building (107 Abraham Drive) at 3 PM.

Following the devo, we had planned to go ice skating, but the rink is only open from 2 to 4 PM. So we will go "blacklight bowling" at the ISU Student Union instead. (Pool tables and video games are also available.)

More information will follow later.

Just a reminder that Ames is hosting this Sunday's Area-Wide Youth Gathering.
We will meet at the Westside church of Christ building at 3PM where we will
have a devotional. Afterwards, we will be going to the Iowa State Memorial
Union to go Blacklight Bowling.

I believe the cost is $1.50 for shoes and $2.50 per game. If I can find an
ISU student to go with us, we can get about a $1.50 per person discount.

Our building is located at 107 Abraham Drive. If you are coming from I-35,
take the #111 exit towards the west. Stay on Highway 30 until you come to
the Elwood Drive/ISU exit (The 3rd exit after getting onto Hwy 30). Go North
on Elwood to the 1st stoplight (Mortenson Road). This road will wind a
little but you will eventually come to a 4-way stop sign. Continue West on
Mortenson Road to the 2nd stop sign which will be on South Dakota Ave. Turn
North on South Dakota and go until you come to Todd Drive (If you get to the
stoplights on Lincolnway, you went too far). Turn East on Todd. The
church's parking lot is on the corner of Todd Drive and Abraham Drive.

Call me on my cell phone if you have problems. The number is (515) 290-5737.

See you Sunday!

In His service,
Roger

We Still Haven't Learned!

In spite of what we think we have accomplished as a society and regardless of all the books that have been written on the subject, husbands and wives continue to make the same mistakes their grandparents made. Not only that, we have added a few mistakes of our own and divorce continues to increase, creating a society with little understanding of commitment. But divorce is not the problem. To identify the problem will require a genuine honesty that can only be found in going back to basics.

Little is being done to prepare our young people for marriage. We wait until something goes wrong before we apply our expertise. In too many cases, we have allowed too many people to blindly enter a relationship that God designed to last for a lifetime and we are reaping what we have sown in this blindness.

Obviously, we need to prepare our young people for marriage on God's terms. But we also need to realize that God's way also has the solution for the problems within the marriages that already exist. This seminar is designed to present God's plan for the home as the solution, reminding us that God has never given us an assignment without providing a way that will allow us to get the job done.

Synopsis Of Lessons

"BACK TO BASICS"
Even though we live in a time when over fifty percent of all marriages are ending in divorce, this lesson points out that divorce is not the problem. Lack of commitment, especially to God, is part of the problem. This lesson explores every aspect of the problem to provide suggested solutions which have their source in God's word.

"IT TAKES TRAINING"
Every aspect of our relationship with God involves the need for certain training. Since we live in "sophisticated" times, those who are young not only do not know, they don't know that they don't know. However, before we place the blame on the young, we need to recognize that we who are older seem to have been reluctant to teach. This lesson offers training solutions that are tried and true because they are founded in the Bible.

"THE SEARCH"
Although we cannot expect to return to the days when parents selected mates for their children, it is certainly time for parents to be involved in giving their children the tools they need to conduct the search for a mate.
The importance of a Christian marrying a Christian is stressed in this lesson, but the discussion goes far beyond the limited idea that "Christian" means someone who simply attends the worship assembly. God's pleasure needs to be placed at the top of the list of importance in a Christian's life. This includes the search for a mate. Included in this lesson is the warning that there is no such thing as an incidental decision in the life of a person who is serious about Christianity.

"AS CHRIST LOVED"
The success of the home begins with a real understanding of the roles God intends for everyone to play. We live in a time of certain confusion in regard to these roles. Much of this confusion is probably the result of men who have taken advantage of their position as one of privilege rather than responsibility. This lesson stresses the need for God's man to understand what it means to love his wife as Christ loves the church.

"THE JOY OF SUBMISSION"
Although this lesson points out that submission is not the exclusive assignment of women, it does emphasize that it is part of their assignment. With the hope that we can be convinced that every part of God's plan is designed for us, for our welfare, this lesson stresses the fact that the submission of the Christian woman is filled with blessings and joy.

"WHO COMES FIRST?"
There are so many questions about the specifics of the marriage relationship. This lesson addresses many of these questions, such as sex, the adjustment involved when children come, the credit trap, etc.

After a detailed discussion of a variety of problems, this lesson offers specific solutions to each question by the application of Christian principles, beginning with the Golden Rule.

November 4-7
Sunday-Wednesday
Dear Fellow Servants,
Charles Speer from Sunset International Bible Institute in Lubbock will be here Sunday through Wednesday for a meeting. The info is as follows:

Jesus, The Man For All Seasons
"How He Handled..."

Discover how Jesus handled...

Sunday, November 4th 9:30 AM "...Prayer" (Luke 11:1-13)
The events of September 11 drove Americans to their knees in prayer. To whom are we praying? For what, for whom should we ask? How does He respond? The answers to those questions take root in the very nature of God. Jesus, a man of prayer, will teach us how to pray.

Sunday, November 4th 10:30 AM "...Worship" (John 4:1-24)
One author comments, "One could say that we have become a group of people who worships the worship, instead of the One to whom the worship is to be given. The Focus that once was vertical has become horizontal." Another calls it, "junk food worship" or "a religious Disneyland." What does Jesus say? He came into a similar situation. He refocuses our attention on God, the object of true worship.

Sunday, November 4th 6:00 PM "...Tradition" (Matthew 7:1-9)
Tradition gets a bad rap sometimes, especially in a religious context--age old rituals, same old songs, week in and week out. However, we all participate in meaningful traditions--holiday ways of doing things, family ways of doing things. Jesus interfaced with a religious hierarchy who had lost the original meaning of God - ordained traditions.

Monday, November 5th 7:00 PM "...Grace" (John 8:1-12)
We all do wrong things, don't we? The guilt attached to sin protects us from simply blowing it off. However, unresolved guilt leads to many emotional maladies. Jesus bestowed grace on many a "bruised reed." His compassion we all need!

Tuesday, November 6th 7:00 PM "...Forgiving Others" (Matthew 18:15-35)
"He hurt me deeply; I can't forgive him." Vengeance we think, is the cure for personal mistreatment. Many people hold grudges and harbor resentment for years - old hurts. Jesus forgave all others and will teach us how too.

Wednesday, November 7th 7:00 PM "...Discipleship" (Luke 9:18-26)
Who do people think Jesus is? Who do you think He is? If He is the Son of God, He is worthy of following. What does it mean to be His disciple?

WE CARE CAMPAIGN – Ankeny, Iowa

An outreach of the Ankeny Church of Christ

We’re getting our Christianity out of the building and into the community, and we’re asking for your participation.

Dear Brothers, Sisters and Friends:
The Ankeny Church of Christ is teaming up with We Care Ministries, an outreach program of the White’s Ferry Road Church of Christ, in West Monroe, LA, for a week-long campaign of seeking out and serving the needy in Ankeny.  Physically, emotionally, and spiritually.  And we're seeking your participation to make the most of this opportunity.

DURING THE DAY
During the day, we will send out three-person teams to canvas Ankeny door-to-door. We will be meeting new people and making new friends.  We will be offering food and clothing to those that need it, or asking residents if they know of anyone in need.  This also includes visiting those that are in the hospital or shut-in.  But we will also use this opportunity to ask them about their relationship with God.  We Care Ministries is sending a “cadre” of trained, experienced, campaign workers (that do this for a living) to help us in our “caring crusade”.  We will feed and house them during their their stay in Ankeny.  Two people in the three-person teams will be from We Care Ministries.  The third will be a local representative.  The local representatives will be members from the Ankeny Church of Christ as well as, we’re hoping, members from churches of Christ in the Des Moines and surrounding areas.

We know it can sometimes be intimidating to talk to total strangers about the Gospel.  That’s why the local representatives have the option of being a “silent partner”— to watch and learn from the We Care Ministries team members.  The idea is, that after a day or two of being a silent partner, local representatives can then become an active team member, freeing up a We Care Ministries team member to form another team.  By the end of the week, we hope to increase the total number of teams canvassing Ankeny.  The church in Ankeny has been preparing and training for the campaign for months.  We held a We Care Seminar in August, in which Larry West, founder of We Care Ministries, came to Ankeny and presented the We Care approach to presenting the gospel to people.

We are needing members from surrounding churches to help be a part of the door-to-door teams that hit the streets of Ankeny.  If you have free time during the days of October 14–21, please call Junior Morgan, 515-964-1888, to find out how you can help.

IN THE EVENING
In the evenings, guest evangelist Willie Tollison will be presenting inspiring messages each night at 7:00 pm.  Willie is also from We Care Ministries.  Everyone is invited to come.  And we encourage you to bring your friends.  We will be inviting the people of Ankeny that we meet during the day to come and hear Willie’s messages.  And our own members will be attending as well, and hopefully bringing their friends.  There will be a new topic every night:

Sunday, Oct. 14:From Hell’s House to Heaven’s Palace
Monday, Oct 15:If I’m good, am I lost?
Tuesday, Oct 16:How did God save people 1900 years ago?
Wednesday, Oct 17:   Baptism—Important or essential?
Thursday, Oct 18:Ghosts or bodies in heaven—which?
Friday, Oct 19: God’s non-denominational church—interested?
Saturday, Oct 20:There’s a great day coming.  Are you ready?

HOW YOU CAN HELP
For more information about the We Care Campaign, or to volunteer your time, contact Junior Morgan of the Ankeny Church of Christ at (515) 964-1888.

Thank you, and God bless,

Each congregation will have time to tell about their outreach efforts, prayer requests, their congregational needs and plans.  So plan to roll up your sleeves and glean ideas that can be used at your home congregations.
Bring your evangelism ideas, things that have worked and even those that haven't.  What may not work in your area may be a valuable tool for some other congregation.
If there is a work project that extra hands would make easier let everyone know. Congregations working together can accomplish much for the Lord, spiritually and physically.
Prayer requests will be complied and distributed so that all can pray for their needs and success.
Let's work together and win souls for Christ in the state of Iowa!!
